Thermoplastic Polyolefin (TPO)

Roof sheets are reinforced and contain UV stabilizers, fillers, pigments and flame retarders. TPO membranes are highly reflective with heat-welded seams and may also use tapes to adhere accessories.

Features:

  • PO (Thermoplastic Polyolefin) – TPO roof sheets are reinforced and contain UV stabilizers, fillers, pigments and flame retarders
  • TPO membranes are a heat-weldable blend of polypropylene and ethylene propylene rubber components, which gives them more flexibility in colder temperatures
  • TPO membranes are available in white, gray and tan, in a variety of thicknesses and typically carry a 20-year warranty
  • TPO can be installed in two different ways: mechanically attached or fully adhered

Benefits:

  • TPO roofing systems are becoming very popular for their high resistance to UV Rays, particularly in warmer climates
  • With the ability to reflect nearly 87 percent of harsh sun rays away from a roof, a TPO roofing system can help reduce cooling with the added benefit of being resistant to environmental pollutants and chemicals, abrasions, tears, and punctures, making it highly versatile
  • TPO provides LEED credit qualification, and some TPO membranes are Energy Star rated and Cool Roof Rating Council approved

Ethylene Propylene Diene Monomer (EPDM)

EPDM is a synthetic rubber derived from oil and natural gas (ethylene propylene and is a popular choice for the cost and its ability to withstand UV and ultraviolet rays.

Features:

  • More commonly known as the “rubber roof” EPDM is an extremely durable thermoset, synthetic rubber roofing membrane widely used in low-slope buildings
  • It has two primary ingredients, ethylene and propylene, which are derived from oil and natural gas and is available in black or white and comes in a wide range of widths, ranging from 7.5 feet to fifty feet, and in two thicknesses, 45 and 60 mils
  • EPDM can be installed either fully adhered, mechanically attached or ballasted, with the seams of the roofing system sealed with liquid adhesives or specially formulated tape

Benefits:

  • EPDM provides good resistance to corrosive chemicals, diluted mineral acids, and vegetable oils
  • A properly installed and maintained EPDM roofing system can last up to 30 years as it is resistant to the sun’s UV and ultraviolet rays
  • EPDM rubber reflects heat and helps cut cooling costs in summer and acts as an insulator during the colder months, to help reduce heating costs

Single Ply

Single Ply roofing materials are generally referred to as elastomeric (EPDM) or thermoplastic systems. Thermoplastic (TPO and PVC) materials are typically reinforced plastic polymers readily formed or changed in shape upon the application of heat. Seams are welded together using hot air equipment. Thermoset (EPDM) materials are made up of synthetic rubber compounds which may or may not be reinforced and do not change shape once heat has been applied. Tapes or adhesives are used to seam thermoset materials. Single Ply membranes may be used in retrofitting existing Built Up Roof Systems and Modified Bitumen Roof Systems.

Single Ply Membranes Black Roofing & Waterproofing installs:

  • PVC: (Polyvinyl Chloride)

There are several different ways to install Single Ply Membranes:

  • Laid Ballasted
  • Fully Adhered
  • Mechanically

PVC is thermoplastic in nature and resists weathering. PVC is popular for its dependability, heat-welded seams, high reflectivity, superior physical attributes and resistance to water, chemicals, grease, fire, and punctures. PVC (Polyvinyl Chloride) membranes are extremely versatile.

Benefits and Features of PVC (Polyvinyl Chloride) Membranes:

  • They come in a variety of colors, thicknesses, widths, and reinforcements, making them a good option for almost any commercial roofing project
  • Like TPO membranes they are installed with a heat-welded seam which makes them extremely waterproof with the added benefit of being able to withstand harsh chemicals
  • Great flexibility, lightweight, easy to install and competitive in price
  • Resistant to UV radiation, acid rain conditions and perform well under dramatic weather changes
  • Wide variety of grades available to choose from (grades are the type of protection desired)
  • Consistency in quality as these are manufactured in a factory under stringent quality control guidelines
  • Its durability makes PVC a solid option for restaurants, airports and commercial facilities that have grease, oil, and chemical concerns, or environments that experience dilute acidic effluents
  • The white reflective PVC roofing panels have a surface that provides a cooling effect which can help reduce cooling costs in warmer climates
